Lesson plan : Understanding Nouns


  • Objective:

Students will be able to identify and use nouns in sentences.


  • Materials:

Whiteboard and markers

Handouts with examples of nouns

Sentence strips with nouns highlighted


  • Introduction (5-10 minutes):

Begin by asking students if they know what a noun is.

Write the definition on the board: "A noun is a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea."

Give examples of nouns, such as "dog," "school," "happiness," and "book."

Ask students to give examples of nouns.


  • Direct Instruction (15-20 minutes):

Pass out handouts with examples of nouns.

Review the examples on the handout and ask students to identify which words are nouns.

Write the nouns on the board and discuss the different types of nouns (common, proper, singular, plural, concrete, abstract).

Use sentence strips to provide examples of nouns in context and ask students to identify the nouns.


  • Guided Practice (15-20 minutes):

Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of sentence strips.

Ask students to work together to identify the nouns in each sentence.

Monitor and assist as needed.


  • Independent Practice (20-25 minutes):

Provide students with a worksheet that includes sentences with blank spaces for them to fill in the missing nouns.

Students will work independently to complete the worksheet.


  • Closure (5-10 minutes):

Review the different types of nouns that were discussed during the lesson.

Ask students to share their answers from the independent practice worksheet.

Summarize the main points of the lesson and ask students to give examples of nouns they remember from the lesson.

Collect the independent practice worksheets and use them to assess student understanding of nouns.
